"We can't let the misogynist banter of Eddie McGuire slip past", Miki Perkins, The Age, June 19, 2016

Collingwood President, Eddie McGuire's, on radio antics with mates James Brayshaw and Wayne Carey, have been characterised and excused by McGuire as lighthearted banter and a joke.  The "joke" centred around the drowning in an ice pool of Walkley-award winning journalist Caroline Wilson, while bystanders were to be encouraged to donate money to a charity in return for holding her down and bombing her.  But it is this easy dismissal of sexist and violent behaviour towards women as a joke, while at the same time implying that those who don't see it that way are lacking a sense of humour, which underpins and reinforces the disrespect and lack of equal treatment faced by women. The acceptance of such gendered disrepect and inequality is seen as a major contributing factor to the normalisation of male entitlement and the prevalence of family violence in our community.
