Port Lincoln deaths, a tragedy but also a crime, Clementine Ford, The Age, January 6, 2016
6 January 2016
In this article, Clementine Ford looks at the need to examine the crime behind the tragedies of family murder-suicides. The perpetrators of these crimes are often portrayed in the media as "top blokes", admired by friends, neighbours and the community in general. The crime is seen as an isolated tragedy and completely out of character - the perpetrators as victims of circumstance. Ford argues that we as a country still suffer from an inability to balance what we think we know about family violence with what is actually presented to us. Violence is more often hidden, and that the perpetration of violence is a choice. Men who are kind to their friends and colleagues can also be cruel to their families.
