'Submit to your husbands': Women told to endure domestic violence in the name of God, Julia Baird and Hayley Gleeson, abc.net.au, July 18,2017
18 July 2017
A type of domestic abuse rarely discussed in Australia is that of
spiritual abuse, where an abuser uses/misuses religious teachings and
doctrines to abuse and/or control another person. "...concern has been
growing amongst those working with survivors of domestic violence about
the role the Christian Church of all denominations can either
consciously or inadvertently play in allowing abusive men to continue
abusing their wives." Neither is this restricted to Christianity, but
is common to all patriarchal, hierarchical religions where men dominate
the power structures and women are restricted to subordinate and
supportive roles. This lengthy and well researched article looks at
this issue in the context of the Christian Church in great detail, and
contains a link to part one in the series - Domestic Violence and Islam. Find the article here.
