As we welcome in the New Year, 2017, it is worth
pausing to consider how the Australian community is travelling with
regards to family violence and violence against women in general. The
statistics are not good. It is heartening that in Victoria, as a result
of the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Family Violence
handed down in March 2016, we are seeing a coordinated and properly
funded approach to responding to and preventing family violence.
Perhaps this can be used as a guide for other states to step up to this
most challenging of issues in the Australian community. In some states,
despite increasing rates of reporting family violence, services have
been cut...
